As a writer, I personally yearn to write in journals adorned with nostalgic imagery and wide open pages to scribble my musings. My newest artist journal, "Picturesque Europe", was created with vintage photos of crumbling, eerie statues, German book pages, postage, butterflies and castles.

The journal has four original collages on the outside and inside covers. The outer collages were sealed with a mix of acrylic resin, exterior varnish and a hint of gold metallic paint. The collages are meant to evoke an old-world and ornate atmosphere.
Inspiration can be found anywhere; in a painter's brush strokes, in a poet's melodious words, in the peaceful sound of a flowing creek or in the orchestra of sparrow songs high in the trees. To find inspiration, the key is to open our hearts and souls to all life offers us. When we do, the lily in mid-bloom becomes luminous and the kiss from our beloved becomes transcendent.

I want to record and share the people, places and things that inspire me, to keep my own creative fire burning. Here is one of my all time favorite places:

The Oregon Coast

Last summer, my boyfriend and I went on a vacation to the Oregon Coast. This was not the first time I had ever cruised down Highway 101 along this lush landscape of rocky coastlines and lush forests. But on this trip, this place penetrated my soul on a deeper level and planted thousands of seeds of inspiration. Here are a few photos I took on our travels:

I loved this wood footbridge. So picturesque and peaceful. I could sit here with a book of poems and my journal all afternoon.

This shipwreck from long ago on the beach spurred my imagination. While history tells us exactly what happened, I found it inspiring to create my own stories about the people who crashed on the beach and what the ship once looked like.

Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach never ceases to amaze me. We trekked the beach in our bare feet, in search of sea shells and glimpses of starfish and driftwood. This is an image of Haystack Rock in a late morning overcast haze.
We visited the aquarium in Newport and I was struck my the surreal beauty of jellyfishes. I loved the way their opalescent bodies illuminate in the deep blue sea.
Artistic Process and Details:

The wood cigar box was first painted with two coats of grey acrylic paint. To add surface interest and texture, I used a pulled-paper technique. With matte acrylic gel, I imprinted strips of newspaper in layers on the outside of the box.

The surreal dream collages on the lid of the box were made from decorative cardstock and Steampunk ink engravings from the Harter's Pictorial Archive. The quote, "Inside this room, all my dreams become realities....and some of my realities become dreams", is from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

I adhered tarot cards around the outside and inside of the box. Four wood blocks were painted grey, then sea-sponged with crimson and glued to the bottom with Goop contact adhesive. The entire box was sealed with both Mod Podge and varnish.

I have been experimenting with new techniques and materials, such as stamping on tissue paper, using acrylic varnish as a sealer and branching out to new vintage ephemera. There are endless variations in making decoupage candle holders. Mine usually consist of two layers-- vintage ephemera like weathered novel or dictionary pages and a top tissue layer from decorative napkins. Here are a some of my newest creations from my studio:

The first layer consists of vintage novel passages from a 1963 paperback edition of Jane Eyre. The pages used had a lovely, natural patina. Then, I carefully separated the top tissue paper layer of fancy napkin decorated with a soft floral motif and glued it over the text. Two coats of Mod Podge and one coat of acrylic varnish were used to protect the fragile decoupage layers. For a finishing touch, raffia was wrapped around the candle holders to add an organic look.

The first layer consists of vintage pages from a 1973 paperback edition of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Then, I carefully separated the top tissue paper layer of a fancy napkin decorated with red roses with a robin's egg blue background and overlaid it on the text. Several coats of Mod Podge were used to protect the fragile decoupage layers. For a finishing touch, white ribbon was wrapped around and tied in bows around the candle holders.

My latest creation to come out of my workshop is an altered cigar box. I found the cigar box in a local smoke shop and loved the shape of the box and the quality of the wood. Because the outside of the box already had a thick, glossy varnish, I did not sand it down and wanted the wood itself to be a part of the overall aesthetic.

My Memorial Day morning was blissfully spent in my makeshift art studio-- a spare bedroom in our duplex that houses boxes of vintage ephemera, paint, ribbons, papers and other supplies. I wanted to incorporate one of my latest vintage ephemera finds into my decoupage candle holders. I had found a 1945 paperback edition of the French classic Les Dieux Ont Soif (The Gods Will Have Blood) by Anatole France and disassembled it for art supplies. I also had recently bought some Paris themed napkins from DaisyFlowerPetal on Etsy, and was very inspired by their romantic designs.

First, I altered the French novel pages by painting it with a soft pink wash that was made with one part acrylic paint and three parts water. I blotted the wash with a paper towel to add a mottled appearance. Then, from my leftover morning coffee in the pot, I added coffee stains to add an aged look. After the papers were dry, I speckled burnt umber acrylic paint.

After cutting and sizing the French novel pages for the glass votive candle holders, I adhered them to the surface with Mod Podge. Then, I cut out images of a romantic rose from the napkins and separated the top tissue layer. I had wanted to stop there, but felt like something was missing. This feeling is always with me while making collage/decoupage/mixed media projects and helps lead me into new creative territories! There is a point when the artist knows they have finished the last detail. So, I had the idea to stamp the words "Bloom", "Bliss", and "Dream" on white tissue paper. I carefully cut them out and glued them centered on the flower images.

I adore the colorful patterns of these book covers! I am really excited about going vintage book hunting myself and see what interesting materials I can find to make journals with.
Here are some of the steps I took to create this upcycled collage jewelry box:

The exterior of the jewelry box was hand-painted with two coats of rose acrylic paint and a light coat of ivory paint. I sanded down and distressed the surface between and after the coats of paint. Two coats of varnish was used to seal the paint and collage work.

The bottom of the jewelry box was created by assembling various rectangles of decorative paper and vintage dictionary pages.

I glued vintage scrabble pieces that spell out the word "BEAUTY" with super-strong, craft contact adhesive.

The sides were decoupaged with vintage dictionary pages that were hand-stamped with black flowers. The trim has tiny, hand-cut paper hearts

Sometimes I enjoy creating things that require an almost pain-staking attention to detail. I also enjoy transforming ordinary objects into unique pieces of art. The goal to make something beautiful is always my strongest motivation. For me, beauty is food for my soul, the force that soothes suffering and brings me bliss. One of my most favorite quotes by D.H. Lawrence is, "The human soul needs actual beauty more than bread."Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180180419675336104.post-56104616753806816532012-04-28T18:31:00.000-07:002012-04-28T18:34:15.731-07:00In Circles of Hypnosis
The lake creases like lovers' sheets,
whose eddies of slumber shape new geographies.
A million fingerprints of secret beings
surface, sweep under, in circles of hypnosis.

The sun labors its glare; the sky exhales,
waves flow shore-bound in a slow waltz.
She is a songstress in a silver-sequined dress,
a city aglow with lights at dusk.
Over ripples, sparks skip, and swing
into oblivion.

An unsought music is magnified:
the breeze licking the leaves,
a motorboat whizzing by,
a robin perched on a barbecue
flaring his song-proud breast
to the June sun.
I want rickety roller-coasters and sequined acrobats
I want to wear old Hollywood ball gowns and parade downtown
I want to bathe in holy water full of jasmine buds
I want to inhale the froth of waterfalls
I want poetry on billboards and loudspeakers
I want to love my love with all my love
I want velvet-kisses and blueberry waffles in bed
I want to sing and dance in Technicolor light beams
I want to soar away, to a kingdom of vixens and sea monsters
I want to stretch my wings on currents of chaos
I want to peer down on coastal monsoons and lion caves
I want to release a cluster of rainbow balloons
I want to see them pop, pop, pop at the edge of dawn
I want to lose all direction, run wild in the witch's hour
I want sinful sensuality and ecstatic irrationality
I want life, a fantastic, lunatic life worthy of lyric
I want life--a life louder than a Saharan sun
slapping beds of sand.
I feel like this banner gave my blog a much-needed face lift, with its color and artistry. My Etsy shop banner was done by her as well. I love how she incorporated the John William Waterhouse painting "The Soul of the Rose", along with elegantly cropped photos of my artwork in my shop. Along with having fantastic digital collage skills, Sherilyn also creates unique handmade jewelry that she sells at her Etsy shop, which you can find here: www.etsy.com/shop/clearcrickcottage.
Sherilyn also has a Clear Crick Cottage blog that has gorgeous imagery of old-fashioned beauties and whimsical illustrations. You can check out her blog by going to clearcrickcottage.blogspot.com.
I actually created many things over the last couple of years, storing them in the closet until the day I got the nerve to make this dream come true! My shop, Lovely Fever, has been open for a month and I have to say, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had for such a long time. Above anything, its so wonderful to be recognized for the creative person I am and to actively engage with other creative souls on Etsy. Everyday there is a new challenge, a new inspiration. I look forward to posting more about my creative journey and all the fabulous things that inspire me.

I have met my needs for material objects through thrift stores and garage sales and have learned to love this way of life. Lately, I have wondered if I should take frugality to the next level and conscientiously practice anti-consumerism.

Last Sunday I went to a couple of shopping malls in Spokane, Washington with my boyfriend. As we drifted in and out of retail shops full of name-brand clothing, home décor and lists of other material things, a wave of nausea swept over my soul. There was no sense of consumerism glee within me. Instead, I rejected all these useless things, never once wanting to whip out my debit card.

In an upscale mall downtown, I noticed how every retail worker dressed to match their respective store and wondered how they could afford their clothes with their low wages. As we ate our meal of hamburgers and fries in the food court, several televisions simultaneously played an episode of Hannah Montana interspersed with commercials for more useless things.

What frightens me about our economy is that it is completely depended on consumer spending. Articles abound on how consumer spending is down therefore employers don’t hire new people. If we don’t continually spend our hard-earned dollars on things we don’t need the economy halts to a slow, miserable sputter. I can’t help but think that while we, as a nation, are spending less, we still are gluttons compared to people who lived 50 years ago.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSev4fM9E4WxQLDN1ge1_pTTl-SbSAuSrt5K-1ARJzPRNjM14909TZqLNG8xJpubD9LzXcKt1ao3bJ56njVCXTAGZRGSPP8RtuiQ0PECUNUJt2oS-krCz1WNwTarOhvhajZCp7rZAJDJ4/s400/Riverfront+Park+009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501966166225278226" />

Yet, on that Sunday afternoon we also visited Riverfront Park. We watched the ducks and geese glide along the river. Flowers were full bloom bursting with a kaleidoscope of color and fragrance. Children played in the giant Red Wagon in the park, clustered in laughter and the simple joy of being alive. We did not spend a single cent on amusement rides or food, but the sheer act of walking and observing all the beauty around us soothed my soul. After a wretched week of work, I needed a walk in the park more than ever.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfetGVo-UjKgKpjhfbJt_EdDSnqRfzdQI7QPIDf5n3kfgF7SuHBz6gBJcCaZi53HeMjJkrtJGBHTHgg6rdxA-Q0wTmquVFlg2wh9yE9F47yoDLYX5yoNs2wxe-FlcbcsCl5J-qRQq4L8g/s400/Riverfront+Park+013.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501966157790906306" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180180419675336104.post-78635943864444528832010-07-22T08:52:00.000-07:002010-07-23T07:42:01.011-07:00New Handmade Journals<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 258px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFpk9lN1K4nY9UBsmjsKReqOtpu_tsFYHKUw7B5NIyxTbSWD8rxMy7JUG6tEsNO6p2sxYdno4fSLE4NvF-C1XKypXhk-lL15RRbOMnKgbFmT4Lhqq_z_p7cIPLCTmrj6Pz7Em7er32kFA/s400/journal+pictures3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496764826964056850" />

I am so excited! I have just finished a trio of handmade journals, each one unique and full off decorative detail.

For my experiment in book arts, I decided to use binder rings. What I love about binder rings is that they can be embellished with pretty ribbons and new pages can easily be added.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7huamy-eZg4RIfgsug_C9ivp15zvnamS_0cb6u9NyCC0zaFI6gxGRg_NfGwvXZtcPnvFz36oacpRM8HSw67_QmfeApRjJd62HBCewIKvQ8YaBzC9pNtBVTqrIg0LGCpePq62wvKQc1eU/s400/journal+pictures9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496764858190928802" />

For the covers, I collaged heavy cardstock with vintage ephemera, digitally altered photographs, scrapbook papers and stamping. Overall, I am pleased with the outcome and look forward to designing additional books. As an avid journalist myself, I know the creativity of the journal structure itself can inspire the writing process.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 312px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglTm67C9KZYZyq7aQPDvqH5gfiQAH-nZJjOSucAokQII25HFbCNocba-vt4_Ys89CxIrriM2jmiCb8pl1klbX3qOgsldumzjCmdNSCZyueLpUr5GZw67rL6s-z-knrttuhlCj0Wner8hY/s400/journal+pictures8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496764863617214322" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180180419675336104.post-50866691469934033362010-06-29T11:41:00.000-07:002010-06-29T18:34:39.574-07:00One Way to Save on Vintage Ephemera<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 255px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimeDLAQ1L2nAMo6QNDN77DCHtT-kWozwRjcibkfkctfKf3F969H0bEWtc9B14edZMgsiI-cEBYHecuo9W1pJQ_tpaocYdE_t1ShFcqxRP9Kv4yuU9An7ik1n5dbgqrpMx7QjlVPLJJP88/s400/pretty+girl+and+daisies.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488269382784383170" />

I adore sifting through thrift store bins and flea market stands for lovely paper remnants from the past. How thrilling it is to find a 1940's women's magazine stockpiled with fashion sketches, skin cream ads and glimpses of Old Hollywood glamour.

One vintage magazine alone holds a myriad of creative sparks. I love to delicately cut along images that complement my personal style, then arrange them with decorative paper and found objects in a one of a kind collage.

One thing I don't love is to waste valuable resources. Vintage emphemera can be expensive. Lately, I am using my scanner and photo editing programs to preserve and reuse vintage ephemera. This saves me both time and money, as I can re-size images to fit particular projects and can make one new again with a little digital manipulation.

Having a computer file full of scanned and re-purposed vintage ephemera can help when money is scarce. And some pictures are just too beautiful to only use once!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 365px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWFz8SKNHiLH3jwRycKrfnhvZ-AKR9Hd8gdTzjn8XoEJ2cXEjEJmxR1_QCvvcpekGohfQF-kpcTsTDGg2jCS5EXQzoti5cM2s7V4gEkM8GGtufviQwx_AuPKg0kHQtYvHIMUsimgcLN2I/s400/best+form+lingerie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488269372656053042" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180180419675336104.post-67941070161540726482010-06-28T09:21:00.000-07:002010-06-30T07:55:32.312-07:00In Pursuit of Many Passions<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 384px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi03fuWdMVkBwP597CC4Yazg54AI7dz8Y7FDWXIUQlOuZTuoQR9vrdmvS7HrYMn6lvJ6ZzmclR16D_ETQ0LXVluwK7Hc8ZDeMJBU-pjBjpOCH2bYxxlk5MmYNlg0Wesqo5RPjDIQMyfv2U/s400/vintage+typewriter.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487862018574580530" />
I have struggled my entire working adulthood with the dilemma of choosing a career. The traditional model for employment is to follow one pre-carved vocation and dedicate a massive chunk of your waking hours to it.

Recently, I read The Renaissance Soul: Life Design for People with Too Many Passions to Pick Just One by Margaret Lobenstine. This book was a revelation for me. She points out that some people become bored and restless when they are cut off from variety. Renaissance Souls are gravitated to multiple careers and hobbies and are invigorated by new challenges.

If I could live my ideal life, this is what it would look like:

I would be self-employed, and have multiple streams of income. Those streams of income would include creating and selling crafts, writing, selling vintage items and teaching via workshops or personal interest classes. To maintain my freedom to pursue these interests, I will live a life of voluntary simplicity. The less financial obligations I have, the better. When I am not busy pursuing all these passions, I’ll learn how to garden, speak French, sew, read, volunteer or whatever strikes my fancy at the time.

Currently, the biggest obstacle I have for obtaining that ideal is the need for a steady paycheck. I need the stability of a full-time job to help pay off credit card and student loan debt. I also want my savings to bulk up before I take the plunge into financial self-sufficiency.

Now that I have a dream in place, I'll draw a plan to obtain my goals. The first step is to develop my craft business, Lovely Fever, and sell my mixed media journals and altered décor boxes online on Etsy. Meanwhile, I will work my day job and keep on paying down that debt until it’s gone. Earnings from my side business will help slowly eradicate my debt load and also be reinvested into the business.

I am excited with the possibilities for a Renaissance Soul life design, but it will definitely take time! It might take several years to rid myself from bosses! But as my time frees up more and more, I know I will pursue the things I love intensely and find a way to make ends meet. For all I know, we get one crack at this thing called life, and I intend to fill it with passion and not as a corporate zombie.

Does anyone out there make a living from multiple interests? Or does anyone long for the freedom of self-employment? If so, please feel free to comment! I would love to hear what you have to say!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5180180419675336104.post-66216767463243796312010-05-31T11:38:00.000-07:002010-06-28T09:54:39.782-07:00The Creative Life: Forging My Own Path<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV7au9lzb4EIBHoKb6BMrlhzHCtEV0XY81QSptIFx_ElPoYIAXtZI6FEhv8v5pFI2N33TqTo62ZxAL-owZkwHP5RTFscnu_8Huq8WTPVsdZ6dsurwlosq1lE8HIaae3KsQb_C3VmBDQy8/s320/sandpoint+pictures1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477506507015841250" />
For years I have tinkered with words, paper and glue, filling journals and crafting decorations for my home. I have pleasured over the details of a poem, stringing lovely sounds of syllables like beads in a necklace. I have scoured thrift stores for wooden jewelry boxes and re-imagined them with vintage ephemera and paint. Although I have submitted and published poems and gave my art away as gifts to friends and families, my creativity has largely remained in the private sphere.

I remember myself as a highly sensitive adolescent full of romanticism and hope for a future dedicated to art. Literature was my first true love. I would take the bus from the suburbs to Capitol Hill in Seattle to go to Twice Sold Tales in search of used paperback books by Anais Nin, Tennessee Williams, Herman Hesse and John Steinbeck. After- school afternoons were spent beneath maple trees reading and writing poetry.

During my college years, I studied art and literature, never thinking too far off in the future. I enjoyed my life at The Evergreen State College, a small liberal arts school full of creative bohemians like myself. I did not realize this would be the last place where the ideas of Camus and Thoreau would be relevant in everyday discussions. I did not realize that long afternoons spent writing poems on the beach would later become a rare and hard-earned luxury.

Growing up, I never wanted anything else but to be an artist and writer. But when I reached the age of financial responsibility and had to struggle to make a living, my truest passions were reprioritized. Unfortunately, the classifieds are not stockpiled for requests for artists and writers. So, I waited tables, tended to small children at daycares, organized clothing at retail shops, brewed lattes and handled screaming customers at call centers to make ends meet.

I have just turned 28 years old and am ready to return to those original dreams that elated my young soul. I realized a while ago that traditional employment is not for me, that I must forge new skills in entrepreneurship. I am planning to sell handmade journals and altered décor boxes at Etsy, infused with my own poetry and mixed media art.

Now that I have lived in the real world, I do realize that the creative life is hard work to obtain. Balancing the necessary need for money and the equally necessary need for the spiritual fulfillment of making art is a challenge. In order to succeed as a writer and artist, I will need to keep trucking away at the day job, and spend my free-time dedicated to my passions. Little by little, I plan to sustain myself with the fruits of my creative talents and choose to live simply.

I am excited by the idea of self-made opportunities, of not waiting for the world to fabricate a vocation for me—because it won’t. Here is a quote by Irene C. Kassorla that fuels my soul as I carve this new, wondrous path:

“You must have control and authorship of your own destiny.
